Raphael Weinroth-Browne releases haunting new single/video 'Posession'

Internationally acclaimed Canadian cellist and composer Raphael Weinroth-Browne has unveiled 'Possession', the second single from his forthcoming solo album Lifeblood, due out 3rd October. An electrifying artistic statement, 'Possession' fuses Arabic-inspired melodies and heavy rhythmic grooves with the gothic melancholy of Opeth and the icy, otherworldly dissonance of Meshuggah.

As with the video for previous single 'Lifeblood', 'Possession' was filmed in Poland, this time in a decaying yet grand old theatre. Directed by the acclaimed Grupa13 (Behemoth, Leprous), the video explores the psychological landscape of a performer on stage, turning an ordinary audience into a menacing, masked presence. Drawing visual inspiration from the masked ball in Eyes Wide Shut, the clip reflects themes of performance anxiety, self-doubt, and the disorienting distortion of perception.

Raphael comments on the new single: "With 'Possession' I wanted to combine Arabic-inspired melodies and heavy grooves with the haunting, gothic atmosphere of Opeth and the cold, almost alien atonality of Meshuggah. This track originated as an improvised jam in maqam Saba, a scale associated with sadness and lamentation that appears in both Turkish and Arabic music. This early incarnation of the piece became a viral reel on Instagram before I decided to turn it into a fully-fledged composition. I feel that 'Possession' encapsulates my diverse influences and remains one of my most succinct and direct musical statements."

A deeply personal body of work, Lifeblood captures the raw duality at the core of Weinroth-Browne’s expression: the transcendence of creative flow alongside the consuming intensity of ambition. Blending the weight of progressive metal with Middle Eastern modalities, modern classical precision and immersive electronic textures, Lifeblood marks his most audacious and fully realised solo work to date.

Commenting on the album, he adds, "I consider this album to be my most autobiographical work to date. As a metalhead turned full-time professional cellist making original music outside the classical realm, I have taken the road less travelled, nurturing my artistic vision and trusting my intuition even on an unorthodox path. I have forged a unique career and identity around my musical voice and the way it manifests itself through the cello. The defiant, audacious energy of this music represents my inexorable drive to continue pursuing my dream in spite of all obstacles.

Lifeblood was engineered and co-mixed by Darren McGill at Union Sound Company in Toronto, with a final mix by acclaimed producer Adam Noble (Leprous, Katatonia). The album was then mastered by Robin Schmidt (Placebo, Ben Howard). Adding a visual dimension to the album’s immersive sound, the captivating cover artwork was created by Maldivian artist Maahy, celebrated for her ethereal, nature-inspired aesthetic.

Known for his emotionally charged performances and boundary pushing vision, Raphael Weinroth-Browne has become one of the most innovative cellists of his generation. Merging his roots in progressive metal with a passion for Middle Eastern music, he has forged a singular artistic voice that defies traditional expectations. His cello work can be heard on over 200 studio albums, including Woods of Ypres’ Juno Award-winning W5: Grey Skies & Electric Light and in major film and TV soundtracks. Viral cello covers of Opeth, Katatonia and Steven Wilson have earned praise from the artists themselves, while his genre-spanning studio and stage career continues to attract international attention.

Since joining Norwegian progressive rock icons Leprous in 2016, Weinroth-Browne has played over 200 shows worldwide with the band and helped shape the sound of three studio albums. He has shared stages with Evanescence, Apocalyptica, Devin Townsend and performed in front of 40,000 at Hellfest, as well as at prestigious venues such as London’s Royal Albert Hall. As a solo artist, he has opened for artists ranging from Polish neoclassical pianist Hania Rani to Nordic folk ensemble SKÁLD and UK legends Soft Machine.

In recent years, Weinroth-Browne has pushed further into experimental performance and contemporary dance. His solo debut Worlds Within (2020), a 40-minute composition built entirely from layered cello, earned critical acclaim for its emotional depth and innovative form. In 2023, he performed the album live with Ottawa Dance Directive to a sold-out audience at Canada’s National Arts Centre. In 2024, he was commissioned by the UK’s James Wilton Dance to compose BACH Reimagined, an 80-minute score that toured leading venues across the UK and Germany in spring 2025. Following this, his recent single 'Speed of Light' continued the forward momentum, merging baroque motifs with crushing distortion and polyrhythmic intensity, earning acclaim for its fearless fusion of past and future. As his creative output grows increasingly multidisciplinary, Weinroth-Browne continues to defy genre boundaries and redefine what the cello can be in the 21st century.

With more to come later this year, Lifeblood marks a major milestone in Weinroth-Browne’s uncompromising creative journey, an album that channels passion, pain, discipline and defiance into a work that feels at once ancient and immediate, cerebral and gut-wrenching.

Bolstered by global fan support, the band swiftly earned major festival slots, including headlining the Festival Republic Stage at Reading & Leeds Festival and performing a secret set that attracted one of the largest crowds to date. They also performed at BBC Radio 1’s Big Weekend, All Points East, and festivals across Europe and North America, alongside their own sold-out tours.

The trio followed this in 2022 with their self-titled album The Hunna, partnering with Grammy Award-winning producer Gil Norton. Adored by their loyal fanbase of nearly a decade, this album marked a significant new chapter for the band.

ACCVSED release new single 'Make Sure It Hurts'

German metalcore outfit ACCVSED just unleashed the emotional new track 'Make Sure It Hurts' from their upcoming debut Dealers of Doom. The album is set for release on 1st August via Arising Empire

Watch 'Make Sure It Hurts' here: https://youtu.be/u6RGNXrejAY
Stream here: https://arisingempire.com/accvsed

ACCVSED have been making noise for a while now with singles like 'Day of the Locust', 'Avoider', 'Never Enough', 'Don't Let Me Fall Apart' and 'Killer of Minds', gradually building a solid rep as one of the most promising heavy acts coming out of Germany. Each release has only added to their momentum, with fans digging their emotionally raw songwriting and explosive live energy.

Dealers of Doom feels like ACCVSED are laying down their mission statement – unfiltered, intense, and diving headfirst into the darker side of life.

Since their formation in 2021, ACCVSED has adhered to one principle: presenting themselves to the world authentically, without playing a role or sugarcoating their expressions. They channel their deepest traumas and fears into their music, creating a distinct and energetic blend of bold guitar riffs, unique vocals, and raw emotion. This combination shapes their sound into an unstoppable force.

Hailing from Wiesbaden, ACCVSED quickly realized that being a local band was not their ambition. They moved swiftly and made a significant impact on the music scene with their debut EP, House of Doubt, released in December 2023. The breakthrough single 'Currents' led the 6-song EP, establishing a foundation for their constantly evolving musical style and garnering them worldwide attention. This success resulted in support shows and festival appearances throughout Germany and its surrounding countries.

Undeterred, ACCVSED set their sights on the next step, releasing their debut full length Dealers of Doom via Arising Empire on 1st of August 2025. Showcasing their evolution from their most aggressive and unrelenting side, ACCVSED is set to release 10 songs fueled by anger, deepest fears and regrets and a fatalistic view on life as such. As they dive deeper into the abyss, each album track feels like a bitter pill, leaving the listener in a state of catharsis and hard to swallow truth about their very own take on life. With relentless energy and bold sound, breakdowns feeling like a hammer straight to the bone, raw vocals feeling like hands woven tightly around your neck – ACCVSED makes sure you will swallow every single one of it, without escape.

German hard rockers Wucan reveal new single 'Holz auf Holz'

After a three-year creative process, German hard rockers Wucan will return with new album Axioms, due 29th August via Long Branch Records.

Today, the band unveil another glimpse of Axioms, with new single 'Holz auf Holz'.
Stream 'Holz auf Holz' and pre-order the album here: https://wucan.lnk.to/axioms

"I wrote 'Holz auf Holz' on a cold March evening in 2024, during one of my little candle rituals at home," says singer Francis Tobolsky"Suddenly, my incense caught fire without even touching the flame – and right in that moment, the melody came to me out of nowhere. It was immediately clear that this had to become a song. We call it 'Holz' for short, and it came together quite quickly, since the guys immediately understood what kind of track it was meant to be. To me, this song strongly reflects our East German rock and krautrock influences. And in true Wucan fashion, this German-language song serves as a commentary on the current political and social situation in Germany."

True art is characterised above all by its constant renewal - a combination of the tried and tested with the innovative. Like all influential artists who follow this golden rule, Wucan demonstrate their capacity for artistic evolution with their new album, Axioms.

On the new record, the four-piece heavy rock outfit led by frontwoman Francis Tobolsky blend the distinctive elements of their previous studio records - Sow The Wind (2015), Reap The Storm (2017), and Heretic Tongues (2022) - with fresh ideas, resulting in a broader stylistic range and a more clearly defined conceptual approach. While the band continues to reference hard rock, krautrock, East German rock, and metal, the eight new tracks are also infused with touches of progressive rock, isolated electronic elements, and a playful jazz attitude. Or as Francis Tobolsky aptly puts it: “The foundation of our music is international 70s hard rock enriched by contemporary influences – this time with even more bombast, brutality, and complexity.”

Wucan's videos for previous singles 'KTNSAX' and 'Irons In The Fire' can be viewed here: https://wucan.lnk.to/axioms/youtube

"The title Axioms stands for the fundamental convictions our band is built upon, convictions we no longer question," says bandleader Francis Tobolsky. "After ten years of making music together – seven of them in this lineup – there were moments when everything could have fallen apart. This album was created during a time when each of our lives was changing significantly, and it bears the imprint of those personal experiences. The fact that we’re still making music together is neither a coincidence nor a matter of convenience – it’s our axiom."

US doom outfit FRAYLE reveal chilling new single ahead of Bloodstock Festival performance

Cleveland, Ohio based doom purveyors FRAYLE have begun their triumphant return with a brand new single, the chillingly dense 'Walking Wounded'. The track impresses with a whispering wall-of-sound that crushes with spine-tingling stacks of harmonies, providing a haunting showcase of what's to come from the band in 2025. The song arrives alongside a cinematic music video drenched in macabre aesthetics, blending both elegant and eerie imagery.

When asked to describe 'Walking Wounded', FRAYLE simply cited a profound quote by Chimamanda Ngozie Adichie“We teach girls to shrink themselves, to make themselves smaller. We say to girls, you can have ambition but not too much. You should aim to be successful but not too successful. Otherwise you would threaten the man.”

FRAYLE are widely acclaimed by fans and media alike, and are set to stun with more upcoming music soon. The next era of FRAYLE will solidify recent nods from the likes of Revolver and Knotfest, crowning the band as one to watch in the heavy music scene. Helmed by frontwoman Gwyn Strang and guitarist Sean Bilovecky, FRAYLE merge the heaviness of occult-driven doom and blackgaze with eerie vocal stylings and rich atmosphere.

FRAYLE will kick off their European headline tour - featuring several festival stops at the likes of Brutal Assault, Bloodstock, Summer Breeze and more - on August 4 in Katowice, Poland. The band has also confirmed additional USA performance dates in 2025, before and after the European tour. See below for a full listing of where you can catch FRAYLE on the road.

ZATOKREV unveil new single featuring Zeal & Ardor

Swiss doom/sludge outfit Zatokrev have unveiled their new single 'Unwinding Spirits' which features guest vocals from Manuel Gagneux of Zeal&Ardor. This is the second single from their immense and immersive upcoming new album, Bring Mirrors To The Surface, which will be released 29th August via Pelagic Records.

Pre-order the album here: https://orcd.co/zatokrev

The band comment on the new album:  "Our new album, completed in 2022, reflects a time of profound change and resilience. It's a testament to how challenges were overcome and new beginnings were embraced, both personally and creatively. The fact that the new album is only released three years later is due in no small part to the overcoming of serious life challenges and profound changes. The new album is the follow-up to the previous album, Silk Spiders Underwater, where the story began. Now, Bring Mirrors To The Surface tells the story to its conclusion."

Bring Mirrors To The Surface also features vocal contributions from SchammaschInezonaMinsk, and Bölzer.

After all the detritus of pain, time, and letting go has been slogged through, 2025 sees Zatokrev return with an immense and immersive new (double LP) album: Bring Mirrors To The Surface obliterates the past and conjures a future previously unimagined, pleading with humanity to remember the power of the will and the imagination.

An album in which to truly lose oneself, these songs provide a candle in the dark, an arcane map, providing directions to the tearing down, and the painful realizing, as a means to metaphysical freedom. A beauty unmatched in any previous Zatokrev material has become entrenched in every aspect of this record. Moments of comfort fow freely into the deafening sounds: Bring Mirrors To The Surface encourages one and all to stare into the abyss of the self. Zatokrev have given us a musical grimoire. Sounds heard through the ages have congregated in a unique moment in time.

Changes, recognize, release. A black fame splitting the ground in two, opens the gate to where we lose ourselves”

Lord Of The Lost release new single featuring cello virtuoso Tina Guo

Flamboyant German chart-toppers Lord Of The Lost unveil 'Ghosts' – the awe-inspiring new single from their upcoming studio album, OPVS NOIR Vol. 1, out 8th August 2025 via Napalm Records. The Hamburg-based outfit is joined by none other than world-renowned cellist Tina Guo, celebrated for her electrifying performances with Hans Zimmer and collaborations with heavy acts such as Kamelot, Beyond the Black and Sabaton. This haunting piece of art expands the sonic universe of the genre-defying band even further, fusing dark metal with theatrical finesse and profound emotional depth.

Pre-order OPVS NOIR Vol. 1 here: https://lnk.to/LOTL-OPVSNOIR/napalmrecords

Tina Guo commented on the collaboration: "Working with Lord Of The Lost on 'Ghosts' has been an incredibly inspiring and fun experience. The entire creative process flowed beautifully, and it was a true joy to create art with such talented and wonderful individuals. I especially loved the cello battling with Chris! Their passion and vision made every moment memorable, and filming the music video together created an unforgettable energy and synergy."

Chris Harms adds: Tina Guo is not only a phenomenal cellist, but also one of the most wonderful and inspiring people I’ve ever had the pleasure of meeting in the music industry. Performing this song with her -and even playing the cello together - was incredible, both in the studio and during the video shoot. But I can’t wait to have her on stage with us live someday!”

'Ghosts' is more profound proof of Lord Of The Lost ’s ever-evolving soundscape – a testament to their ability to constantly uncover new angles while staying true to their roots. Following the era-defining success of their #1 album Blood & Glitter (Official German Album Charts) and their celebrated appearance in the finals of the Eurovision Song Contest 2023, Lord Of The Lost continue to push boundaries with unmatchable versatility. OPVS NOIR Vol. 1 is the first album of an exciting album trilogy, featuring several strictly limited special editions - pre-order your copy of OPVS NOIR Vol. 1 and act fast, as the first formats are already selling out.

What is the essence of Lord Of The Lost in 2025? That is one of the questions OPVS NOIR Vol. 1 fearlessly begins to answer. Once again, the band proves not only musical excellence but also masterful craftsmanship: Produced by Chris Harms, recorded, mixed, and mastered at the legendary CHAMELEON STUDIOS in Hamburg, the 11 tracks hit with a force and brilliance that immediately transport us into a dark yet colourful ballroom. From there, the tone is set: Dark Wave Metal on an amphitheater scale.

Chris Harmscomments on the album: “Darkness, melancholy, loneliness - all words that often have negative connotations, that we may associate with danger, sadness and loss, and not without reason. But darkness can also be security, melancholy the warm and sentimental feeling of our memories, and loneliness becomes necessary silence, peace and inner contemplation. OPVS NOIR is a travel guide, or perhaps also a travelogue, through the dark sides of our inner world, which so often move precisely in the area of tension between what we emotionally categorize as positive or negative. And with Vol. 1, all of this is just the beginning of this 3-part journey...”

Swiss post-metal masters Abraham announce new album; reveal first single

With four studio albums and European tours supporting Cult Of Luna and The Ocean, the Swiss masters Abraham have forged their reputation as one of the leading post metal bands in Europe.

They now return with news of their fifth studio album - the mighty idsungwüssä: a third and final chapter to a series of concept albums of truly epic proportions, at the centre of which lies a sprawling, apocalyptic portrayal of humanity’s downfall. idsungwüssä will be released 26th September via Pelagic Records.

In celebration of the news, the band have revealed the first glimpse of idsungwüssä - 'Naked in a Naked Sky'.

Watch 'Naked in a Naked Sky' here: https://youtu.be/qEGZCK4Wpzc
Pre-order idsungwüssä here: https://orcd.co/abraham-idsungwussa

Still staged in the gritty atmosphere and philosophical weight of post-metal, sludge, and ambient noise, idsungwüssä sees Abraham march even further into dissonant and defiant territory.

“The three albums are clearly linked together thematically”, the band comment, “although, rather than an additional chapter, idsungwüssä is more like a parallel narrative to Débris de mondes perdus. The latter was a jump in time after Look, Here Comes the Dark!, whereas idsungwüssä is a jump in space, a journey away from earth. It should be the final piece of this little jolly ride.”

This album isn’t just heavy, it is absolutely drenched in delicious filth, and yet by embracing even more the melodic interludes and melancholic passages, they create a devastating contrast to the wall of power coming from stacked guitars, catastrophic drums and raging, sharp vocals – delivered in Swiss-German dialect.

“The album was recorded between November 2024 and February 2025, all while handling our day jobs and in a period that was, on a personal level, not the easiest for some of us. It is only in the last two weeks of the recording process, right before sending it out to mixing, that it sort of came together and started to feel like a coherent album, an album that we could be happy and proud about. For an album with change/transformation as an underlying theme, this is sort of performative!”

This urgency and duress bleeds into every song, an hour long journey that moves from the grim to sublime, from melancholy to raw destruction — evoking ruined civilisations and the last wails of fractured psyches. Yet there is something less bleakly human, more ethereal at moments, as if glimpsing beyond the constraints of the body and its wheel of flesh and death.

Strewn throughout the record are appearances of Farfisa Louvre organ - prominently featuring on an Abraham album for the first time. The band were also joined by Kevin Galland (Coilguns) who added additional Moog and piano parts.

The band continue: “Our approach to recording guitars was different than what we did before. Instead of having one guitar on the left playing a part and one on the right playing another part, we decided that left and right guitars were to play the same part, and the center guitar was to play another part. We just stacked more guitars whenever we needed. And oh did we use a lot of reverb, too!”

The structures and movements of the songs found within idsungwüssä are unique and fresh - a balancing of themes and emotions that is both intoxicating and unsettling, it is an immersive journey that rewards deep listening and challenges the boundaries of genre. From the patient grandeur of coming extinction, to the chaos and fevered urgency of the aftermath, in idsungwüssä Abraham move forward from prophetic lamentation to an elegiac visceral response. The emotional closure of this expression is felt, something final that will leave you speechless and with only one real option; listen to it again.
