Tallah announce third album Primeval: Obsession // Detachment and stream new single

Unpredictable, uncompromising and unrelentingly original, Tallah have never been easy to categorise. The Pennsylvania-bred unit are back with a vengeance today as they announce brand new album Primeval: Obsession // Detachment, due out 5th September via Earache Records and drop 'What We Know', the first single and opening track.

Simultaneously maximalist, raw and unfiltered, 'What We Know' sets the tone for what’s to come—an album unshackled by rules or expectations. Blending acoustic guitars, trap-metal 808s, string quartets, talkbox solos and more into one furiously cohesive piece, the track is a mission statement for the chaos ahead.

“The first song that was written for the album, and easily my #1 Tallah song to date,” says bassist Max Portnoy. “The amount of experimentation on this track paved the road for the tone of the whole record. From performing the first half of the song on acoustic guitars, to layering trap-metal 808’s over a string quartet with dissonant plucks in the chorus, to a trading guitar solo with a talkbox and a slide, you can find so many fun tools we incorporated, without it feeling disjointed. To have all that experimentation, in a driving and energetic track with a massive chorus, made for my favorite piece of work yet. It was a no-brainer to start the record with this one.”

Primeval: Obsession // Detachment is a concept album rooted in narrative and boundless in scope. Set on an alien planet, it follows Ana, a nurse, and Sheelah, an assassin—two strangers pushed to the brink of their morality by the same mysterious group of beings. Their journeys spiral through tests of belief, identity, and loyalty, building toward a finale laced with twists, dualities, and mirrored consequences.

Architect of the exceptional and intricate world-building Tallah have become known for on each of their albums, vocalist Justin Bonitz shares: Primeval: Obsession // Detachment is a concept album taking place on an alien planet. The story follows two characters, Ana (a nurse) and Sheelah (an assassin). Both are approached by the same group of beings, who ask the main characters to each perform a task that will test their values and push their morals to the limit before ending with twist after twist. The album explores morality, duty, personal beliefs, duality, and understanding one's place in society.”

Tracked live in Michigan with longtime producer Josh Schroeder, the record captures Tallah in their purest, most unhinged form. No click. No edits. No polish. Just instinct and execution. It also sees founding member, Max Portnoy, making a major creative shift from drums to bass and Justin recording the vocals for the whole album in one, continuous take.

Providing further context, Max shares: “For me, this album is Tallah finding our voice. During the writing process, no boxes were in place. No rules were set. Whatever felt uniquely us, that was what made the cut. I'm not sure how to even label this record's sound beyond 'Tallah'. It's weird. It's experimental. It's driving, and energetic. It's raw. We recorded live, every instrument at the same time, with no click. That's how we play shows, so why would we record differently? This album also marks my first recording dedicated to bass. I translated my drum knowledge to a new instrument and it was a huge creative breath of fresh air for me.”

For vocalist Justin Bonitz, the experience was equally intense. "I practiced for months and was able to record the entire album in one huge, continuous take with no edits or redos or anything! And I was recovering from pneumonia! Nobody is gonna believe me! It was honestly the highlight of my entire vocal career. I was unsure if I could pull it off, but I went into the booth, grabbed an SM57, turned off the lights, and whatever happened happened. I think it feels more intimate and naked with all the flaws and imperfections, which is perfect for the raw, organic sound of this album."

From mirrored track titles to reversed riffs, Primeval: Obsession // Detachment is Tallah at their most deliberate and deranged. It’s a labyrinthine listen made for close listening and repeat immersion. As with everything they do, the chaos is crafted, and the madness is methodical.

'What We Know'’ is streaming now. Primeval: Obsession // Detachment arrives 5th September via Earache Records.

About Tallah:

Emerging from Pennsylvania in 2018, Tallah fuse the percussive force of second-generation drummer-turned-bassist Max Portnoy with the unpredictable dexterity of vocalist and viral phenom Justin Bonitz and the phenomenal guitarist due of Derrick Schneider and Alex Snowden to form a sound that’s part brutalist nu-metal, part theatrical meltdown, and entirely their own. What began as a raw homage to the early-2000s metal they were raised on—Slipknot, Korn, Linkin Park—has since evolved into something far stranger and far more singular.

After making waves with their 2020 debut Matriphagy, a twisted concept album soaked in trauma and noise, the band were hailed by Knotfest as delivering “one of the best metal releases of the year” and by Metal Hammer as “leading the charge on the new wave of nu-metal.” The follow-up, The Generation Of Danger (2022), saw them push their hybrid sound further into chaos—earning millions of streams, high-profile festival slots, and nominations at both the Heavy Music Awards and AIM Independent Music Awards.

But it’s on album three, Primeval: Obsession // Detachment (out 5th September 2025 via Earache Records), that Tallah truly shatter what’s left of the mould. Decamping to Michigan to record the entire project live with longtime producer Josh Schroeder, the band abandoned edits, clicks, backing tracks, and rules. What remains is pure instinct—feral, volatile, and unrelentingly human.

To date, Tallah have clocked up 29.7 million Spotify streams and 6 million YouTube views.

Your Spirit Dies release ferocious new single 'Unjust God'

South Carolina's own Your Spirit Dies is set to unleash a powerhouse of metal and hardcore with their ferocious new single, 'Unjust God'. The track serves as a striking preview of the band’s forthcoming full-length debut, My Gnawing Pains Will Never Rest, set for release on 2nd May via MNRK Heavy

Watch the video here: https://youtu.be/rjq1KYQIAfM

Pre-order the album here: https://yourspiritdies.ffm.to/mygnawingpainswillneverrest

The crushing power of 'Unjust God' is immediately felt as melodic guitars intertwine with dark, foreboding orchestrations, setting the stage for an intense journey. The track surges forward with blistering drums and razor-sharp black metal tremolo picking, maintaining relentless momentum throughout. As the energy intensifies, frontman Brandon Byars unleashes a fierce scream: “I stare into the eyes of an unjust god!", a searing cry that leads into a striking, bold clean chorus, amplifying the emotional weight of the track. The song’s unyielding fury and haunting contrast make it a powerful anthem for those who dare to confront the unknown.

Comments vocalist Brandon Byars, “‘Unjust God’ is a song about personal struggle with religion. Along with the title of the record, the idea came from the Book of Job about an individual who faces great personal struggle. However, in this instance the person is pushed too greatly and not only loses their faith, but turns their back entirely.”

Watch Your Spirit Dies previously released video for 'In The Depths Of Grief' here and 'Serpentine', featuring Dan Weyandt of Zao, here.

Across small towns in America, untold stories are waiting to be heard and Columbia, South Carolina’s state capital, is no different. With just over 140K residents, the city may be small but it pulses with an undeniable spirit. Your Spirit Dies taps into that raw, resilient energy, channeling the heart of an underdog and an unyielding drive. After gaining nationwide attention and praise from outlets like Brooklyn Vegan, No Echo and more, the band tells their story with their debut album My Gnawing Pains Will Never Rest.

Signing to MNRK Heavy, the musicians crafted what would become My Gnawing Pains Will Never Rest in Connecticut alongside producer Greg Thomas [END, Misery Signals]. The guys not only leaned into influences as diverse as At The Gates, Killswitch Engage, Napalm Death and Godflesh, but they also culled inspiration from giallo horror classics a la The Beyond. Samples from the latter were even woven into the fabric of the soundscape alongside the screams of Mia Goth from MaXXXine.

“The record encapsulates every single thing we’re about,” notes Byars. “We’re five people who were born in small towns in the South. We were never supposed to leave these places; we were ‘supposed’ to live and die here. For us, the simple fact we’re doing this is huge. We tried to craft an album that stands on its own, and we busted our asses to make it as different as we possibly could.”

My Gnawing Pains Will Never Rest is a defining leap forward for Your Spirit Dies, with standout tracks featuring collaborations from some of the scene’s fiercest voices. Dan Weyandt of Zao brings his raw energy to 'Serpentine', while Blaythe Steuer of No Cure joins the band on 'A Snow In Summer'. Carson Pace of The Callous Daoboys makes an impact on the intense 'Night Pierces My Bones' adding another layer of power to this already crushing album.

With their debut full-length Your Spirit Dies continue to refine their unique approach to emotionally charged metalcore. The album offers a raw and introspective look at personal struggles, spiritual questioning and the weight of loss. As they evolve, the band is steadily establishing themselves as a significant force within the metal scene, with My Gnawing Pains Will Never Rest setting the stage for even greater things to come.

Multi-faceted rock outfit PLAIINS release new single 'Happy Faces'

Rock outfit PLAIINS present new single 'Happy Faces' along with a music video. This is the first single from their debut album which will be released this summer via Long Branch Records.

Watch the video here: https://youtu.be/AItykSQ9zw0

Stream the single here: https://plaiins.lnk.to/happyfaces

“'Happy Faces' is a fast and raucous punk indie song about the duality of the protagonists views of the importance of putting on a happy face to promote a joyful view on the world and being courageous, throwing yourself into the unknown and the compromising hypocrisy of going too far," comments singer Chris Reardon. "Do you become a happier freer person or is it a mere mask obscuring a person's view on reality? As the song starts it all seems to point toward the first but as the song progresses the protagonist takes things further and further. Buying a whole bar a round of drinks on his credit card without any thought. As he burns out into an insanity, screaming "Happy dumbass faces"."

PLAIINS hit you like a freight train - songs full of power and character, craziness and energy. Founded by singer Chris amidst the pandemic PLAIINS are growing on the soil made fertile by bands like IDLES, QOTSA and Turnstile. Since the release of their debut single 'The Wolf' in March 2022, Dizzy, Flo, Timon and Chris have racked up tons of streams, been featured in major editorial playlists on all important platforms (All New Rock, All New Punk etc) and been a recurring guest on big radio stations like BBC Radio 1, BBC Introducing and RBB Fritz.

Anyone who has loved rock music over the last decade or so will be familiar with David Jakes and Jack Wrench. Jakes was the broodingly intense singer with Lonely The Brave; a complex character blessed with a once-in-a-generation voice. And Wrench was the explosive drummer with Arcane Roots, a man equally at home with math-rock complexity and sheer rock power. These two exceptional talents have been united in Interlaker, who might just be the sensational rock band you’ve been waiting for since they walked away from their former projects.

Jakes and Wrench – who only knew each other vaguely from their previous bands – brokered their new partnership on Instagram; exchanging casual messages, discovering a mutual love of REM and Pearl Jam, before progressing to swapping demos and song ideas, eventually writing and recording their brilliant debut album entirely online.

The sense of the unpredictable that courses through Interlaker’s album has also extended to an unlikely return to the live arena. The band – augmented by live members including Wrench’s brother – made a triumphant live debut at London’s Omeara last year, and played throughout 2024, including their debut festival performance at 2000trees festival in July.

Rest assured, Interlaker are a tale of the unexpected that everyone is going to love.

New Zealand's metal stars Alien Weaponry reveal new anthem 'Taniwha' featuring Randy Blythe

This Friday, 28th March, New Zealand modern groove metal trio ALIEN WEAPONRY will release their heaviest, most powerful and mature offering to date, Te Rā, via Napalm Records. Today, in celebration of this week's release, the band has unleashed one of the album's most aggressive, death-metal leaning offerings, 'Taniwha', featuring a raw, heavy-hitting contribution from longtime supporter and metal icon Randy Blythe of Lamb Of God.

Take a listen to the new track now – a special bonus listen two days in advance of the album's drop – and see below for insight into the track's inspirations. The new anthem follows acclaimed latest singles 'Mau Moko' ("...top-notch technical thrash metal..." - Heavy Consequence) and '1000 Friends' ("a driving, riff forward affair that makes it super easy to bang your head to" - MetalSucks).

Watch here: https://youtu.be/U8HuDJTqvEU

Of the new single, ALIEN WEAPONRY comment: "Lamb of God played a significant role in making Alien Weaponry what it is today and this collaboration with Randy Blythe feels like one of those ‘pinch yourself’ moments that our teenage selves would never believe possible. Randy’s lyricism and vocal expertise was an amazing addition to this song and we are beyond stoked to share this song/milestone with the world."

Pre-order Te Rā here: https://lnk.to/AlienWeaponry-TeRa/napalmrecords

Alien Weaponry have solidified themselves as one of the greatest young metal bands of their generation with renewed musical tenacity and crucial messaging. Te Rā is a bold, unwavering cry for a future in which we can all take part in the legacy of peoples like the Māori and others all around us – people who, if they aren’t seen, most certainly need to be heard.

With their third full-length album, Alien Weaponry expand on their hallmark messages of cultural, societal and environmental resilience while delivering their most massive-sounding, focused musical output ever. In the hands of veteran producer/mixer Josh Wilbur (Lamb Of God, Gojira, Megadeth) and featuring a guest vocal appearance from longtime Alien Weaponry champion Randy Blythe of Lamb Of God, Te Rā’s gnashing blend of groove, nu, math and thrash metal shines with anthemic choruses and refreshed technical skill.

On Te Rā, listeners can hear the band doubling-down on the aggression in the verses before applying temperance, especially in the case of 'Taniwha', a death metal-leaning banger featuring the particularly raw guest vocal from Randy Blythe. Lyrically, there’s a noticeable tilt towards despondency, hopelessness, and frustration on Te Rā. While bassist Tūranga Porowini Morgan-Edmonds' lyrics in Māori on songs like 'Tama-nui-te-rā' and Ponaturi' draw from the themes of history, battle lore and mysticism that made the first two albums so rich, frontman/guitarist Lewis Raharuhi de Jong's English-language lyrics illustrate the impact when culture collides with disenfranchisement day to day.

'Crown' and 'Hanging by a Thread' take us into the headspace where struggle pushes people to the brink of desperation, while on 'Blackened Sky' and '1000 Friends', Lewis addresses universal woes like the looming threat of World War III and the damaging effects of social media. On album closer 'Te Kore', Tūranga dives into primordial nothingness at the root of the Māori origin story, while on 'Mau Moko', he finds the middle ground between these perspectives. Taken as a whole, Te Rā grapples with what it’s like to be caught in the pull of divergent cultures – not just for the descendants of colonized people, but for all of us.
