After the profound and epic journey of their acclaimed, pandemic-era masterpiece Red Alert in the Blue Forest (2022), Finland’s celebrated Von Hertzen Brothers return with their ninth studio album, In Murmuration, due for release on 25th October. 

In Murmuration will be released on Von Hertzen Brothers’ own label, DoingBeingMusic, on limited-edition crystal-clear vinyl gatefold LP, CD and digital. Merch bundles will be available from the band’s website. Pre-orders will be available from 1st August. 

Von Hertzen Brothers will play album launch shows in Finland and the UK at the end of 2024 before returning to the UK, Europe and the US, including Cruise to the Edge in spring 2025.

In true Von Hertzen Brothers style, In Murmuration creatively juxtaposes the band’s previous release. Whilst their imaginative, multi-genre hard rock and harmonies remain, the band’s artistic pendulum has swung more towards an air of optimism and renewal. The result is a work filled with big choruses, stadium rock anthems, art-rock with 90s vibes and catchy power-pop.

Whilst the themes within the album may not be as deliberately opinionated as on previous releases Red Alert in the Blue Forest and War is Over, there is a naturally occurring sense of constant change throughout. Precise and intriguing observations on the global political landscape, the tricky human relationships of this age, resilience and personal growth all provide lyrical subject matter. The first half of the album embodies a transformation of mood, bringing forth some positivity and love, and the second half journeys through challenging relationships, a literal call for change, separation, loss, longing and a final resolution.

Vocalist/guitarist Mikko von Hertzen says: “The shapes and the overall tone of the musical content on this album could be a bit surprising to some of our newer followers, but not to those who have been listening to us from the beginning. Musically speaking, we have proudly carried the cloaks of ‘prog-wizards’ for the last two albums, but what has not been so widely discussed lately is our ability to write good pop choruses and great catchy rock anthems with good vibes. We felt like it was now time to bring forth that side of us once again. The lyrical themes still deal with the everyday struggles of being humans in this f*cked up world, it’s a source that keeps on giving, but we wanted to step out of the forest and into the sunlight to mingle, discuss and celebrate. We live in an age of constant change where everyone is trying to find a secure footing in life, sometimes full of joy and sometimes filled with utter disappointment. Amid all that, the trick is to stay alert and lean to one another. Like starlings in murmuration. After the pandemic, and now as the world has once again opened, we have somehow felt lighter in our everyday lives. We acknowledge the contradiction of course, since the world with its horrors hasn’t changed much… It would have been easy to drown in those doomsday moods, but writing these songs we felt the need to tackle these problems from a more forgiving and positive standpoint.” 

From the anthemic opener to the reflective closer, In Murmuration ebbs and flows much like the starlings after which it is named.

The instrumentation on this album has also evolved. The three brothers Mikko, Kie and Jonne, with drummer Sami Kuoppamäki, are joined by multi-instrumentalist Markus Pajakkala, who performed with the brothers on their acoustic tour in 2023. Notable for his saxophone solo on 2022's 'Peace Patrol', Markus brings a new dynamic to the album. Guests on the album include a gospel ensemble and the Budapest Art Orchestra.

Now in their 23rd year, Von Hertzen Brothers have consistently delivered music on their own terms and In Murmuration is no exception. This is their third self-produced album, the others being the award-winning Approach (2006) and War is Over (2017).

GuitaristMark Mynett continues: "It's based around a quirky lullabyAnabellehad written on the lyre and the harp (as you do!), that became the foundation for the intro and verses, this was the very first song that we wrote together, and I love how it turned out. The resulting textures, riffs, grooves and ‘character’ vocals of the verse really set the stage for the fireworks to go off during the chorus….and I love those killer hooks!"

Plague of Angelscomprises a collective of exceptionally skilled musicians, united by their passion for crafting exhilarating metal compositions that push the boundaries of creativity. In the words ofAnabelle,"This project is a collective of monster talent and, above all, friends. It's all about experimenting and having fun." 

The organic metal concept - which drove the success of their debut single - stemmed from an earlier collaboration and live event called ‘organic doom’ that, alongside Leeds Cathedral pipe organistDavid Pipe, guitarist Mark Mynett spearheaded. Celebrating the rich heritage of the pipe organ by making it relevant to today's modern music audiences, the experimental gig was a huge successful, with the event covered by local, national, and international media. This gave rise to the unique and groundbreaking Plague of Angels and ‘Organic Metal’ project.

Given the huge response to their debut single, the band aren't losing sight of their original goal. This is just the beginning.

Annabelle concludes:"The response on a national level is mind-boggling – I’m still reeling! Looking back at my younger self, who struggled with mental health, identity issues, and a fair share of adversity, it’s hard to believe that I could tell her this is where she’d end up. “I have a love for movies like Superbad and American Pie - there’s always an awkward love story, which we’ve all had a similar experience of being in at some point in our lives. I wanted to capture that and put it in a song. A uplifting instrumental with emo, I-wish-I-was-cooler, lyrics, just like Taking Back Sunday used to do.

“I hope people listen to the lyrics and can be like “oh my god that’s totally me” whilst also wanting to dance and scream about how uncool they are!”

A fever dream of the alt-scene, From Inside come out swinging with rock riffs, pop synths and choruses written for you to scream.

The four-piece, who attended the same high school in Liverpool as The Beatles, returned in 2023 with new frontman Zaid Elgahmi and have since released six singles, already garnering support from BBC Radio 1's Introducing Rock and Kerrang! Radio. 

Last year the band launched their own podcast/live stream, From Inside Out. Guests have included Kerrang! Radio’s Jon Mahon, Misfits Boxing ring girl Jade Berry, and former Head of Music at Kerrang! TV, Mark Adams.

Swiss/German modern metal frontrunners, Ad Infinitum, redefine their sound as they look to the future with their upcoming album, Abyss, out 11th October via Napalm Records. Since breaking into the scene in 2020, Ad Infinitum have experienced a remarkable rise, evolving their musical style with each release. While their earlier offerings showcased a symphonic metal approach, Abyss reveals a whole new side of Ad Infinitum, marking their most dynamic, modern and progressive record to date.
 
Today, the band offers a first taste of what’s to come by unleashing the mesmerising and catchy opening track, 'My Halo', featuring powerful breakdowns and setting the tone for the album. This first single arrives with a captivating official music video.

Modern metal quintet The Oklahoma Kid have released a visualiser for their brand new single 'Masquerade', out now via Arising Empire. Known for their very own blend of genres, the avant-garde five-piece never fall shy of pushing the boundaries and breaking old conventions.

The Oklahoma Kid deliver breathtaking modern metal that bridges the gap between technical intricacy and energising rhythms. Since forming in 2012 the band - consisting of David J. Burtscher, Fred Stölzel, Robert Elfenbein, Tomm Brümmer and Andreas Reinhard - have consistently pushed boundaries and have established their foundation in the German metal scene.

After their successful debut album Solarray (2019) and struck by the global pandemic, The Oklahoma Kid set their focus on writing new music with one simple goal in mind, to better themselves and give every fan something to crave for - their 2022 album Tangerine Tragic.

Tangerine Tragic is built on the strengths of their debut Solarray. It plays with new ideas and concepts, comes gentle as a breeze and strikes hard as a wrecking ball. The album was recorded and produced by Jan Kerscher (Ghost City Recordings) and mixed and mastered by Lance Prenc (Alpha Wolf, Polaris, Dealer), which gives the production its full-blown punch.
